The Gist of Freedom is Still Faith tells the story of William Still and Peter Gist.
Their story is now a part of the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom!
Hi Lesley,
We met at the Harlem Book Fair and then at the Amistad conference in Montclair. My family settled on Staten Island, NY as free Black oystermen from Snow Hill, MD.
I teach at West Side High School and we're plannning a series of workshops in February '09 with African American authors . . . It would be wonderful if the students could hear your story and learn more about the Still family.

Your book is wonderful: your family’s story is a delight to read. I quickly read it the first time and then reread it slowly because the message is so important. Your characters are so well-defined—I could picture each one of them and all the tragedy, misfortune and pain they encountered. I also was in awe of their courage and faith. I will quickly recommend the book to family, friends and colleagues.
Just one question. On pages 118-119 you tell the story of William Still and Caroline LeCount. Where did you learn that story? How did Mr. Still know that the “Press” article was about Ms. LeCount? I have a copy of the article and her name is not mentioned in the body of the article. Can you tell me a little more about the Pennsylvania State Equal Rights League? Did they organize demonstrations against the streetcars by “packing’ them? Was Ms. LeCount a part of the organization? How can I verify this?
It is a breathtaking story that needs to be told for all to see, hear and understand what when on during those years. Again, thank you for your contribution to an important part of American history. Your family’s story is truly an American story.
